1st day of medical camp

We spent the day in Mararui. We were able to see 140 patients. We had national partners helping to share the Gospel and translate for us. English is the official language here, but the people we saw today did not speak a lot of English so our translators were an enormous help. As we reflected on the day, we were pleased that the people we saw felt seen and heard, and received something to help them, even if it was only ibuprofen. Our national partner/pastor was thrilled with the day, and reported that 20 persons had believed in the Gospel presentation and wanted to follow Christ! He has a church nearby that is already growing, and this will surely be a blessing for them. I loved a line of his closing prayer: “Thank you Lord for not allowing anyone to bring chaos to us today.” It is true- things ran smoothly and people were patient as we worked out some initial details.

Our nursing students stepped up and put their training to use- the ones who were in the pharmacy did an amazing job filling the scripts and providing education to the patients. The ones working with the providers learned a lot about assessment skills, and were able to give some injections and even a suppository (a pediatric patient).

Every patient (adults and children) received Albendazole (a de-worming medication) and every child also received a box of multi-vitamins. Many children are malnourished which prevents them from being able to fight off infections so the vitamins are important. We gave quite a few antibiotics to children. One lady came and before we could see her, she realized she was about to give birth so she headed for the hospital!

Tomorrow we go back to the same site in Mararui and hope to see as many as 150 patients. Pray with us that will be a fruitful day, and that no one would bring chaos to the clinic!
